Frequently Asked Questions

Question:

I couldn’t print out the long term goal, short term goals and objectives (the page where they appear all together). After selecting print, what printed out was the first long term goal only. I tried several times but kept getting only the first long term goal on the page (my selection was the two long term goals that appeared along with the short term goals).

Answer:

When you’re ready to print, notice that you have a choice of “records being browsed” or “current record”. It’s important to select “records being browsed” to get all the goals you’ve selected to print. If you select “current record” the program will only print the one goal.

Question:

Why did you choose to leave it up to the clinician to prioritize the items found on the motor speech hierarchy? Don’t you always work from the bottom of the motor speech hierarchy up?

Answer:

Actually, we deliberately left prioritizing of stages up to the clinician, as Prompt and SmarTools are not a cookbook. Prioritization of treatment goals is a professional judgement. Often, prioritization does go right up the hierarchy. You work on mandibular control, then labial facial, and then address lingual control. However, a client may have difficulty with mandibular control, but not labial facial, then challenges with tongue. So, labial facial would not be a priority. This concept is covered in more depth in The Bridging Techniques to Intervention course.

Question:

Are you planning a version of SmarTools for adult clients?

Answer:

SmarTools is appropriate for adults with a few modifications. The program has three modules at this time. The first module is ‘client,’ in which you do a speech systems analysis and motor speech hierarchy on your client plus select Prompt specific goals and objectives. The second module is ‘words’, in which we analyzed 825 words and phrases by stage and difficulty level. The third module is ‘activities’, in which the words/phrases are used in stage specific, functional activities. Only parts of the ‘activities’ module would need to be changed for adult clients as many of the activities are more appropriate for children. If there is enough interest, we may develop a module or program for adult clients and/or older children. Please email us with suggestions or to let us know if you’re interested in an adult client version of SmarTools.

Question:

!s there any way devise a word list by phoneme?

Answer:

Since Prompt is a motor stage based and not a phoneme based approach, we didn’t design the program to sort by phoneme. However, you can easily make an individualized word list by different critera, includng phoneme. Simply go to ‘find word’ in the word module. Choose your criteria (for example, stage 5, easy, one syllable). You can then fine sort the resulting word list by marking words with the phonemes, vocabulary and or difficulty level appropriate to your client. You will notice there is a little box to mark to the left of each word. Click on ‘find marked words’ box on the menu bar. Print out the list and you’re done!

Question:

Help! The installation number isn’t working!

Answer:

The letters in the installation number are case sensitive. Be sure to capitalize any letters and make sure to include dashes. That should work!
